Day 93 - Why is Vegan Diet?!

01.02.2011

First of Feb the loooooovvveee month due to valentines day, which by the way fellas is coming up do not forget your girlfriends :)

But today is also the first day of my Veganisim.
I made porridge for breakfast and put honey on it, then freaked out that honey may not be allowed to be eaten by Vegans as it come from an animal.
Then I had to think about what I want to achieve by being vegan for a month, am I wanting to not eat animal products due to curelty or not eat animal products just cause I want to try it?
well, a little bit of both.

basically bees don't get hurt when creating honey, not anymore then the bugs that are on the fruit that gets carted to the grocery store that I eat.

so in my books I think it should be ok to eat honey, but then chickens don't get hurt whilst laying eggs?

Now I have confused myself, If a lady at work sells eggs as she loves chickens so has lots of them around her yard but does not need all the eggs they produce, there for the chickens are looked after and not hurt in the process of laying the egg, can I not eat them?

ARGH vegan diet is confusing and seems silly, I mean I understand the not eating meat bit and the dairy if it's from a farm where animals are just used for there food making.

so should I not eat honey and not eat eggs or eat them both?!

What to do, I need to sort out what I want out of this so for the mean time I will eat neither, until I come to terms with why I'm doing this, and how to do it properly.

  1. It depends on personal morals.
The definition of vegan would suggest no consumption of animal products, but you must first decide on ethical stances or a diet based choice. The diet option is as simple as cutting all carbs, or not eating any sugay foods, you simply make the rules of the diet ie, no animal products and cut them all out.
the ethical way of pursuing veganism is a personal, moral decision. Some vegans would be horrified at the thought of eating honey, whilst others justify wearing second hand leather. You can get caught up in an ethical slippery slope by considering that humans are animals and much of what we consume and use has some element of human exploitation. So in that sense eggs and honey wouldn't be ok. But on the other hand humans are only where they are because of their ability to exploit and use other animals to their advantage. So the only reason we are able to live with such abundance that we can chose to refuse animal products are those very same exploitative methods.
That's why I think you set your own rules for a vegan diet in keeping with its main philosophy, and add your own ethical justifications based on what you can rationalise from what is an ostensibly an ethical slippery slope to freeganism. Haha, so yeah, you just make the judgement yourself. There are so many hippocracies in veganism anyway, don't stress about it.
